And, for hip hop’s latest sensation, Nicki Minaj, music was just a cure from a past that would cripple many people.
Her father was an alcoholic who tried to burn down the family home with her mother inside.
From a young age, she showed a love, and a talent, for singing, and originally her goal was to become an actress.
In her working, nine to five life, she was fired from many jobs, which left her feeling rather down and depressed, so she decided to give rap music a try, in a hope to find herself, and her calling in life.
When a friend asked her to write a hook for a song, what she gave her collaborator left her speechless, and from that moment Minaj decided to give rap music a real shot, much to her mother’s dismay.
“I will never forget the panic and fear in her eyes,” she says. “My heart just frickin’ collapsed for a second. My mother was always like, ‘Yeah, you can do anything,’ but her eyes couldn’t lie …”
After taking the step, she then kept moving forward, growing in confidence, using her heart felt, emotion lyrics combined with a soulful voice that drew in everyone from Kayne West to Lil’ Wayne and many, many fans.
