Nicki Minaj BET Awards 2010 Speech – Nicki Minaj has made headlines recently with her public beef with female rap artist Lil’ Kim. Kim has accused Minaj or stealing her style and not “paying homage” to the artists that came before her. While it is clear that Kim has been an influence on Minaj’s style, the attack seemed to come out of left field, and some have said that they believe that Kim is trying to re-kindle her failing career.
Minaj wore short orange and red hair, along with a cream colored corset gown to the 2010 BET Awards. The gown as accompanied by a plethora of expensive jewelry. When her name was announced as the winner of the Best Female Rapper award, she quickly embraced her label mate Drake in a hug, and went on stage to collect her award. Once she reached the stage, she gave all of the credit to her mentor, Lil Wayne.
“This is for Dwayne Carter,” she said as she accepted the award, and also said that she appreciate the “tough love” that Wayne had given her over the years and added:
“Thank you to Queen Latifah because you know what, earlier we were rehearsing and she gave me so much positive energy. I think it’s so important right now for positive energy among women because I’m fighting for women. This is not for me, this is for all of us!!! So thank you all the female rappers that paved the way for me. Thank you Deb. I see you baby! Let’s go”
Wayne was also thanked by Drake when he won the award for Best Male Hip Hop Artist.
Lil’ Wayne is currently serving jail time for drug and weapons charges. During her address Minaj also gave thanks to other female rappers in the industry. The comment was likely made as a way to show that she does appreciate the artists that have influenced her, despite the recent comments that were made by Lil’ Kim.
