Ludacris Wanted Lauryn Hill for Battle of the Sexes
Rapper Ludacris just released his seventh studio album Battle of the Sexes and he pulled out all the stops, enlisting female heavyweights to bring the woman’s perspective on his male versus female hip-hop compilation.
“It’s such a male-dominated industry that I feel like females need more of a voice, so we wanted to hear more of what the hell they had to say,” Luda said in an interview. “With that being said, I went out and got women from the past, the present and the future – everyone from Lil Kim, Eve, Trina, Nicki Minaj. I got records where I’m talking about women and where women are talking back to me.”
While veterans such as Eve, Lil Kim, Monica and Trina; and newcomers Nicki Minaj are featured on Battle of the Sexes, the Disturbing tha Peace founder wasn’t able to nab Lauryn Hill for a collaboration.
Ludacris is said to be disappointed he failed to get Hill on a new song after the retired singer-rapper turned down the hip-hop star’s efforts to feature her on his new album. The “Down Low” hitmaker admits the former Fugees star was another big name he was hoping to work with on his latest project.
“I think Lauryn Hill is like extremely talented and I can say I did try to do that (organize a duet), it just didn’t work itself out.” Hill has not released a disc of new material since her 1998 debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which sold more than eight million units in the United States.
Luda’s latest effort debuted atop the charts earlier this month, and sold more than 100,000 copies. The Grammy-winning rapper’s Battle of the Sexes lost its No. 1 spot falling two slots down to No. 3 with 61,200. After two weeks in stores, the rapper’s compilation project has moved 198,500 copies, according to SOHH.com.
